The 57 Bus written by Dashka Slater tells the story of an incident that changed the lives of two people significantly. One of those people being Sasha, an agender teenager from Berkeley, who wears a skirt to show gender expression. The other being Richard, a Black teenager from East Oakland who comes from a place filled with violence and poverty. During their bus ride home, Sasha falls asleep on the bus. Richard lit a lighter to Sasha's skirt as a way of showing off and playing around with his friends but one thing leads to another and Sasha ends up in the hospital with burn marks. Richard is also affected by this since he gets arrested and charged as an adult with two hate crimes.
